states. a defiant chris christie says he will not let the hysteria over the new jersey bridgegate scandal distract him from what he calls his real job or his second-term agenda. the governor has denied knowing anything about the politically motivated lane closings at the george washington bridge. in a radio interview wednesday, christie was asked about the impact of the state legislature's investigation. >> of course it distracts, but it doesn't prevent us from doing our job. i mean, sure, because if you spent any amount of time on it during any day, that's time that you otherwise would be spending on something else. so, of course, to some extent, but it's an important thing to have to look into and get to the bottom of, and as i've said before, we'll spend the time that we need to spend on it, on appropriate investigations, and then when we have all the information we need, we'll put it out to the public. >> governor christie acknowledged that his approval numbers have dropped considerably, but he says they're still better than most governors across the country. >>> all right, we're gett

, that that is not true. and he was not the only chris christie ally advancing that untrue story about how nothing that happened on the bridge that week affected public safety. the head of the police union and close ally of governor chris christie, he defended the lane closures, quote, was there any ambulance delay? no. was there any police service delay? no. yes, actually. there were delays as a result of that fake traffic study, which was some politically motivated vendetta against that town that still hasn't been explained. paul nunziato has apparently reduced his role in that job. he says he hasn't stepped down fully, but he's reduced his role in the job. for his part, bill baroni has reportedly resigned. so we learned something about this basically still unexplained story. we learned when chris christie's chief of staff briget kelly ordered up those traffic problems in ft. lee, boy, she really got what she wanted. they ordered that up and in many cases it had serious consequences to the people in that town. it may have been a lark to christie staffers and allies, but it was serious to the peo
bridge scandal tonight. chris christie's former campaign manager appears to be the subject of a federal criminal investigation. in a court filing, bill stepien's attorney says his client is in, quote, the throes of a criminal investigation, and that the feds have tried to contact stepien directly, saying that on january 17th, an fbi special agent called stepien's cell. shortly later, two assistant u.s. attorneys called stepien's lawyer. then in mid-february, an fbi agent along with the department of justice investigator paid a visit to stepien's home. we're also learning the u.s. attorney's office tried to contact former deputy chief of staff bridget kelly and her parents. both stepien and kelly were very close to christie, and they are the only two to publicly say they will not turn over any documents. so where is this investigation going next? joining me now, former u.s. attorney kendall coffey. kendall, thanks for your time tonight. >> hey, thanks for inviting me, reverend. >> a criminal investigation, what does that tell you, kendall? >> well, it tells you that they decided that the
